We recently released a fresh version of rekordbox with major new features and improvements. Ver. 6.0 is available via a new subscription structure, starting with a free option that's available to everyone – and you could be surprised by how much is included.

Depending on the features you want to use, and the hardware you DJ with, you might not need to spend any money to get everything you need from the application. So, let's take a look at what's on offer.

WHAT'S NEW IN THE FREE PLAN?

Performance mode via PC/Mac

As well as free use of Export mode (for transferring tracks to USB drives and playing them on CDJs and XDJs), you now get access to Performance mode when you control it with your computer. This means you can try out mixes, cues, loops, FX, and more in a professional virtual DJing environment. You can even mix with tracks from Beatport LINK and SoundCloud Go+ if you have subscriptions to those streaming services.

Performance mode via Hardware Unlock devices

A number of Pioneer DJ units, called Hardware Unlock devices, can enable Performance mode for your entire setup. Simply connect one of these units and you can use Performance mode freely, even if your other products aren't Hardware Unlock devices.

Mobile library sync

Download rekordbox for iOS (ver. 3.0) and connect your computer and mobile device to the same network to export playlists, tracks, and folders between them via your shared library. You can also connect your iOS device to selected CDJ/XDJ models with a USB cable and play tracks directly from the unit.

Inflyte integration

If you use the Inflyte digital promo service, you can check out all the tracks in your Promo Locker without leaving rekordbox. Then, simply choose which files you want to import to your library or turn on automatic sync to make things even easier.

Support for Beatport LINK and Soundcloud Go+ in Performance mode

Access tracks from the Beatport LINK and SoundCloud Go+ streaming services (separate subscriptions required) in Performance mode. All your files will be analyzed by rekordbox, enabling you to view waveforms, set Hot Cues, and tag tracks. You can even create playlists with a mixture of tracks from either streaming service and those in your own collection, stored on your hard drive.

3Band waveform

The newly designed waveform is as functional as it is good-looking. Understand how a track sounds without even listening to it. 3Band waveform uses different colors to indicate the volume of each frequency band.

Light option in Skin settings

If the sun's shining on your screen, switch the Skin setting to Light mode and you'll get a much clearer view of all the information in rekordbox.

Auto Relocate

Rekordbox

Never 'lose' a track again. If the track you want to play next is missing because you moved it, rekordbox will search all locations within a specific folder chosen by you (e.g. your Pioneer DJ folder) until it finds the track, corrects the path, and plays it from the new location.

Ableton Link support

Synchronize the tempo of the master rekordbox deck with other apps on your device, apps on external devices, and hardware that's compatible with Ableton Link technology.

WHAT ELSE IS INCLUDED?

Music management

RekordboxRekordbox

Organise your tracks in different playlists, set cue points and loops, and prepare for your performances.

Performance Recording (with a Hardware Unlock device)

Capture your mixes, whether you're practising or livestreaming on a setup that includes a Hardware Unlock device (not available when playing tracks from streaming services).

Recording in Export mode

Rekordbox

Enjoy free use of the recording function while you're using Export mode. It's perfect for making high-quality digital copies of your vinyl via the PLX-500 turntable, which features a USB output for easy connection to your computer. rekordbox even detects the silence between tracks, so you can play a whole album and the application will split the recording into separate files.

Export mode

Transfer your playlists and rekordbox-analyzed tracks to USB drives and play them on CDJ/XDJ units.

Ddj Sb2 Rekordbox

Link Export mode

Use your computer like a giant USB drive. Connect it to a CDJ/XDJ setup and access your entire rekordbox library without needing to export files or playlists.

DVS mode (with selected Hardware Unlock devices)

Use the exclusive control vinyl (available separately) to scratch intuitively when selected Hardware Unlock devices are connected to your setup. The DVS system offers high-quality sound and responsive performance that feels just like you're playing with analog records.

Lighting mode

Spend less time and effort preparing for performances. Exciting, editable lighting sequences are automatically created to sync with the phrases in each track. You can use these sequences to control lighting equipment via the RB-DMX1 – available separately.

And if you're keen to see what else the application can do, read our guides to the Core plan and the Creative plan.

  • As the title says. Im.just starting out so one of them will be my first controller. From my understanding they both got short and flimsy tempo sliders, is it so bad that you have to use the sync button instead? 🙁

Anyways, give me your opinion of which is the best pick!

    Hi,

First of all, figure out your workflow. The RB relies on Rekordbox, SB2 on Serato. Which platform would you like to use? Serato is a solid and mature software, but Pioneer is doing their job at catching up with Rekordbox DJ. Both are good choices, but requires you to make some broader choices first.

As for SYNC, it’s a nice feature, but nothing you can rely on using. Learn to DJ without it, is my tip. Do a lot of reading and research before you decide on anything.

    Good luck!

I’ve got the SB2 and I rate it pretty highly, you’re right about the pitch controls though they’re really short so small movements equates to a big difference in BPM which can be a little annoying. I started on a cdj set up though so I’m used to just matching the BPM’s first and then nudging to bring in time, I only really use the pitch controls if the software analyses the BPM’s wrong (which happens quite a lot to be fair). One thing I’d say though is I’ve only been DJing for a few months and I’m itching for something bigger and better so might be worth seeing if you can have a go on someone else’s a few times and see whether you’re gonna stick to it, if you are it might be worth saving up and getting something you won’t grow out of too quickly!

    Scott 🙂

Nothing wrong with Sync but that’s a whole different story.

You are just starting out but at the same time you are trying to choose a controller that already doesn’t meet your requirement.
I would say that’s a bad way to start.

When Numark added the longer tempo faders to their lower price controllers it showed that they had a better understanding than Pioneer of what people needed.
Then again it might just be marketing to get you to buy one of the more expensive models?

The real point is that if you want to ride the fader start with a controller that has a usable fader then move to something more expensive if/when you need to.

Don’t let the Pioneer name make you think it’s getting you something more than the other comparative products.

If you are sold on ReKordbox then you are gonna be stuck with the small fader of having to spend more, which if you can afford it is a good move.

If you are still open to using Serato then take a look at the Mixtrack Platinum.

Either way try to get to a store and check them out.

Serato and Rekordbox to be honest could be twins, their feature set is close, very close.
There are a few things though:
Since Serato has been here for a long time, the overall support is a little bigger and it tends to push out new features faster. It is very stable and it also has focus features for live remixing like Serato Flip and now Ableton Link. Overall I also find the interface while less flashy is also less cluttered and I tend to see what I want faster. (Hence I use Serato) Serato currently has more iZotope studio quality effects and more DVS supporters (and cheap ways to get into DVS).

Rekordbox on the other hand is also getting more and more stable. It has more adhoc sample features instead of flip, so it is catering more to the sample effect DJ. As they are all the time pushing new features to get on par with the competition some versions have been buggy, but it seems to have gotten much better since the latest 2 versions. The interface has more flashy color stuff going on, which is “kinda cool” however I find it more distracting (but that is subjective).

As for Rekordbox and its controllers. If you go that way (and that is surely Pioneers intention) you are locked in. You have to use Rekordbox and the according controller and only Rekordbox hardware will work. You are also basically limited to Pioneer controllers for upgrades.

For Serato you would have a more open playing field to upgrade. There are awesome controllers out there with different approaches and expanding workflows, the Denon MC6000 and the MCX8000 (what I use) or the new Roland 808 with build in sequencer or the NS7 III with moving platters…. and many more. I like this level of freedom.

What you shoudl not let you influence: Many new DJs are tricked by clever marketing that Pioneer is some sort of “industry standard”. It is not. Back in the days where CDJs actually were new and current technology it is true that most venues would have them and would want you to play on Pioneer CDJs. Denon played a minor role and that was basically it.
Nowadays all the top clubs expect you to bring your controller and as long as it has RCA connectors they do not give a rats behind what you are using. Once when I felt experimental I showed up with my (back then) TM8 controller, a Korg midi keyboard a Yamaha DX7 synth and a Roland drum machine. All was set up without question (look at setup from van Dyke, Skrillex or Anthony Rotter and you know why).

I hope that helps you out a little bit, do not hesitate to ask if something is unclear.
